DEADLINE March 12: Tell the Exec. VP of BIO: The GMO Debate Is NOT Over!
Katherine Paul - Organic Consumers
In January, an organizer from the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas, invited me to speak on a panel as part of the “Southbites: Feed Your Mind” session. I accepted.
But a month later the invitation was rescinded at the request of Cathleen Enright, executive vice president food & agriculture, for the Biotech Industry Organization (BIO).
I called Enright, to confirm that she had vetoed my participation. She said yes. Why? Because she didn't want the panel to turn into a debate over the health and safety of GMOs.
And then she went on to explain why the debate "is over." According to Enright, GMO agriculture is “sustainable” and GMO foods are “safe.” Anyone who says otherwise is making “scary” statements that have no basis in fact—because every shred of scientific evidence suggesting health or safety concerns related to GMOs “has been discredited.”
Since I won't get the chance to debate Enright in person, I've written a letter explaining just a few of the reasons why I believe she is wrong.
Will you read the letter and, if you agree, add your name to the long list of consumers who believe that there is strong, unbiased, scientific evidence suggesting GMO crops and GMO foods pose a threat to human health and the environment? Please read and sign here.
Thank you!
