New Jersey Citizens Demand Food, Not Ethanol
Lyndon LaRouche
The demand for eliminating subsidies for the heavily subsidized biofuel industry is a crucial element of the campaign by Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp LaRouche to meet the worldwide food emergency by doubling food production. Over one-third of U.S. corn production is currently going into the insane drive to use food for fuel.
"The food companies favor cheap corn; we would rather favor family farmers," said Peter Furey, executive director of the New Jersey Farm Bureau, the Newark Star Ledger of June 28 reported. "Families in Camden now face the choice between filling up their gas tanks or feeding their families," said Kelly Johnston, vice president of government affairs for Campbell Soup Co. State legislator Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer) told the "Food Before Fuel campaign" gathering, "Diverting food from people is more damaging than determining whether they can drive from point A to point B."
If Corzine did petition Washington, New Jersey would join Texas and Connecticut which have already sought a waiver of the ethanol mandates, which are stealing food (corn) for fuel. The demand for a waiver, which would reduce the requirement by 50%, has been supported by a large number of producers' associations, such as the National Cattleman's Beef Association, the National Chicken Council, and the American Bakers Association, as well as numerous restaurant associations and major food companies.
