For battered women, a shelter may be their only option. Some escape with only the clothes on their back. Some don't escape at all. Those who do, need a safe place to go.   The so-called "Equality Act" will hurt these women. It demands that every abused women's shelter welcome men masquerading as women. It forces women to sleep, sometimes on cots in a shared room, with biological men. Or shower with them. Already this has caused horrific abuse of vulnerable women who have nowhere else to go.   These women deserve safety and protection as they try to put their lives back together. Last year, nine women in a California shelter were forced to shower with a biologically male transgender. The local TV station reported that he "leered at them while they were naked" and made "lewd and sexually inappropriate comments."

While these women filed a lawsuit, that is the exception. Most women in this situation have been abused, controlled and blamed. Some are already facing going to court regarding the abuse that put them into the shelter. The last thing they want is more abuse and another battle to fight.

This creates an easy target to those who want to abuse women and get away with it. But you can help us stop this! I can guarantee that the LGBT lobbyists are pushing hard to pass this bill. We need to flood the Senate with our opposition to S 788 to make sure this bill doesn’t pass. Unfortunately, Obama-era HUD policies already have forced open shelter doors to biological men. Liberty Counsel Action has worked tirelessly with HUD to reverse these policies. After months of pressure and negotiations, we are on the cusp of restoring freedom and protections for shelters. HUD recently announced an upcoming rule that will allow shelters to choose how best to protect the safety and privacy of the women they are serving.

The "Equality Act" will create a permanent law that forces shelters to place biological men next to sleeping women. Currently, it explicitly permits NO exceptions for religious groups running a faith-based shelter.

In a Canadian shelter, one woman woke up to being groped by a man leaning over her. He had entered the shelter as a male-to-female transgender. Another woman who was deaf was also targeted and abused by a transgender while living in a shelter.

LCA staff have volunteered in abused women’s shelters. It breaks our hearts to both know and imagine the circumstance that led these women to the shelter. Then only to have them face further abuse in the very place created to keep them safe! These women need you and me to stand up to protect them! Enough is enough. We must stop the cycle of abuse.
