A $10 million donation seems like a hefty amount of cash for the average political donor.

But for casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million over the course of the 2012 election, his latest donation is the least he can do.

Politico first reported Thursday that Adelson, whose net worth is estimated at approximately $40 billion, gave $10 million to Crossroads GPS, a GOP group founded by strategist Karl Rove. He also reportedly made a similar pledge to the American Action Network, which has ties to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Crossroads GPS can accept unlimited, undisclosed contributions. The group is planning to spend tens of millions of dollars in competitive Senate races across the country, from North Carolina to Alaska.

Adelson's foray into the midterm election represents a shift for the Republican heavyweight, who earlier this summer chipped in to the fight against a medical marijuana ballot initiative in Florida.

Lately, he has also has been sizing up potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates, including Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
