Ted Cruz: 'Liberty is under assault'
Jerome Corsi and Garth Kant
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was introduced to an enthusiastic crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference today as “born in Canada to a Cuban father,” bringing to mind the issue of whether or not he is constitutionally eligible to be president as a “natural born citizen.”
Cruz, nevertheless, has made it clear he believes he is eligible for the Oval Office, and he kicked off CPAC 2014 with a set of policy objectives.
“We are at the edge of a cliff,” Cruz told the crowd. “Liberty is under assault.”
Borrowing Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan, “Hope and Change,” Cruz said millions around the world have lost hope because under President Obama achieving the American Dream has become harder and harder to accomplish, and change is a call to end the corruption in Washington, D.C.
“If you were to sit down and try to design an agenda that would hammer the daylights out of young people, you couldn’t do a better job than Obama has done,” Cruz said. “Under Obama, the youth of today have become a ‘lost generation’ with few job opportunities.”
Cruz accused Obama of lying, comparing the president’s statement “If you like your health care, you can keep it” to the pilgrims telling the American Indians, “If you like your land, you can keep it.”
He said the president must “support the Constitution – all of it,” referring to a recently aborted Federal Communications study that would put government “monitors” in TV newsrooms.
“The right to freedom of press means not having monitors sitting in your newsrooms, and the freedom of religion means preventing the IRS from asking people the content of their prayers,” Cruz said.
He received a round of applause calling for abolishment of the IRS.
“By virtue of your being here today, tomorrow, each and every one of you is going to be audited by the IRS,” he joked.
He then ticked off a list of objectives.
“We need to expand energy in the United States and create high-paying jobs all through the nation,” he said. “The real minimum wage is zero for all the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs under America.”
He urged the expansion of “school choice.”
“Every child deserves the opportunity to have a good education regardless who you are or where you come from,” he said.
“We need to repeal Dodd-Frank, a bill you only have to read the title to know no good can come from this,” Cruz said of the law signed by Obama in 2010 that established comprehensive regulation of financial markets.
“We need to audit the Federal Reserve that is driving up the cost of living for all Americans and fueling the power of petro-tyrants like Putin,” he said.
He said Congress needs to pass “a strong balanced budget and quit bankrupting America.”
“What we are doing to our children and grandchildren is morally evil,” he asked. “It’s an outrage that our children and grandchildren are going to have to spend their lifetimes working just to pay off the debt their parents stuffed them with.”
Cruz called for the “repeal every single word of Obamacare.”
“When millions of Americans stood up and said, ‘We need to repeal this train-wreck of Obamacare,’ the Democrats and the mainstream media said, ‘Just accept Obamacare. It’s here and you can’t change it.”
Someone in the audience shouted, “Yes we can!” prompting applause from the CPAC audience.
“We need to end the lawlessness and the corruption,” he said. “We need to pass a strong constitutional amendment that puts term limits in place.”
Cruz insisted it was realistic to repeal Obamacare and to balance the federal budget.
“Solutions will not come from Washington; solutions will come from the people of the United States,” he said.
Cruz said Republicans “got walloped” in recent presidential elections because they followed the advice of “D.C. consultants who say if you stand for principle, you lose elections.”
“Of course, all of us remember President Dole and President McCain and President Romney.
“When you don’t stand for principle, Democrats celebrate,” said Cruz.
He asked the audience to text the word “growth” to 33733 and tweet “#MakeDClisten”
With a nod to President Ronald Reagan, Cruz concluded: “We will bring back ‘morning in America.’”
