A political analyst says American voters have lost trust in the US political and electoral system, Press TV reports.

“We are not simply talking about people who are not registered, we are talking about people who will not show up and I think from the figures that I saw in the last 24 hours, you are talking about, virtually, half of the electorate, the eligible electorate that will not participate,” Mark Dankok said in an interview with Press TV on Friday.

A survey by USA Today and Suffolk University indicates that around half of the eligible voters, or 90 million out of just over 200 million possible voters, will stay away from the polls.

In addition, a Gallup opinion poll reported that less people are planning to vote in the forthcoming election compared to previous presidential elections in 2004 and 2008.

“I think the flaws begin with the way that the elections are financed.... When the Supreme Court, basically, said that corporations have the same constitutional rights as individuals, ... you have tons of money being poured into these presidential campaigns by some very questionable people who have a lot of money to spend,” Dankof noted.

The analyst further argued that the US Supreme Court’s decision has led to the disproportionate influence of corporations, banks and the Israeli lobby on the outcome of the elections.

“So I think that there is a very, very dangerous situation just around the corner and that the political process and people’s trust in it and basic trust in their government and trust in their institutions is probably at an all time low and that is only going to get worse,” Dankof concluded.

The 57th US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 6, 2012.
